How to Determine the Health of Your Furnace

You’ve probably been there before: you’re poking and prodding around your furnace, trying to make sure it’s operating properly. Problem: how do you make sure it’s operating properly? What are the signs and how can you make sure it’s still “healthy”? No worries, Greener Solutions Heating and AC has got your back! Today, we’ll let you know about how you can make sure your furnace is functioning properly and if it’s time to call in the experts.

How Can You Tell?

  • Sounds. You should hear some crackling and other soft noises when your furnace is operating. What you should not be hearing includes rumbles, screeching, loud pops, and pings. If you do, it’s probably time to call the professionals.
  • Smells. When you turn on your furnace after a long summer, there may be a faint odor of dust or dirt burning. That’s fine, during the first few cycles. However, if you smell burning rubber or plastic, that could be trouble. If you smell natural gas, immediately leave the house and then call 911 and/or your gas provider. For other odors, turn off your furnace and call your provider.
  • Efficient operating. Find out what’s the suggested temperature rise for your furnace. Then, put an instant read thermometer on the register closest to the blower compartment, and make sure it’s close to what was specified in your manual.
  • Cleanliness and general upkeep. You shouldn’t see rust, soot, or dirt deposits. When it’s running, the flame should be blue. If it’s burning yellow, this could mean there’s not enough oxygen, and your furnace could be creating carbon monoxide. Make sure to check your filter monthly and have it changed if dirty, to help keep your utility bills down and the longevity of your heating system running.
  • Age. Most furnaces today last somewhere between 16-20 years. If it’s nearing the end of its lifespan, then the health of your furnace is likely decreasing. Start shopping around in advance and keep your eyes peeled for the best options. Not sure how old it is? Check if your furnace has a pilot light. If you find one, then that means it’s at least 25 years old.
  • Higher Utility Bills. If you find yourself having to pay more for your energy bills and it’s not because of the gas or electric company, then your furnace’s heath could be deteriorating. If it’s not properly maintained, you could be spending unnecessary money, so look into improving the health of your furnace ASAP.
