When selecting which AC unit to install, there are several factors to account for to ensure that the unit is sized sufficiently for your home.

Size of your home – The more square footage a home has, the more powerful an AC unit needs to be.
Location of your home – Home’s that are close to the coast or higher in elevation generally stay cooler.
Home’s power source – Solar power may not have enough capacity to sustain a powerful AC unit that is left on regularly.

Types of AC Units

Central AC – This unit is most effective when cooling a large home with multiple rooms. It regulates air through a ducting system that is already installed in most homes. The main component is left outdoors and includes the condenser and compressor. The indoor unit includes the evaporator coil and the air handler. The unit functions by removing the heat from indoor air and pushes it outside while cool air is pushed inside. While this is effective for large homes, they also draw lots of energy and can lose effectiveness if there is a problem with ducting.

Ductless mini split – These ductless systems are much more efficient but lack the ability to cool an entire house at once. These are designed to focus on areas with smaller square footage and utilize a wall mounted interior unit to blow cold air into each room. The problem with these units is that each room will require a wall mounted unit which could eliminate any cost savings that were gained by increased efficiencies.
